At 3:30 in the morning, we finished a challenging well pump repair in Newmarket. The water was back on, our system checks were complete, and the homeowners were asleep.

We quietly packed up and left so they could keep resting.

As the owner of Harris Plumbing, Wells & Drains, I felt proud of our team. Getting to that moment had taken specialized equipment, repeated diagnostic visits, and an overnight repair at the bottom of a 500-foot well.

It had also taken a commitment to stand behind our work when a new pump failed.

A Family Without Water and a Dinner Party Ahead

A Family Without Water and a Dinner Party Ahead

When this family first contacted us for well pump service, they had no water at all. They couldn’t do laundry for days, and they were counting on their water supply to host a big dinner party.

They needed their household working again.

We set out to replace the existing submersible pump, but the well records were incomplete. We couldn’t establish the exact depth before starting, and we couldn’t look down the well to see what awaited us.

When we first attempted to pull the pump, the scale of the job became clear: approximately 500 feet of galvanized steel pipe, filled with water, weighing more than 3,000 pounds.

We needed a specialized pump crane truck.

The crane crew spent three hours pulling the existing assembly from the well.

We replaced the pump and spent another three hours replacing the old galvanized steel pipe with polyethylene pipe and lowering the new installation into place.

It was a substantial job, and we expected the new pump to restore dependable water to the home.

Unfortunately, over the following week or so, the customer continued experiencing intermittent water loss.

After days without water and a major installation, they were still dealing with an unreliable supply. We needed to find out why.

Well Pump Diagnostics: Finding the Failing Motor

Well Pump Diagnostics: Finding the Failing Motor

We returned more than five times at no charge to investigate the problem. I also went out personally at 8 p.m. on a Saturday to help determine what was happening.

The well pump diagnostics eventually revealed unusual electrical readings on the multimeter, pointing to a failing motor in the newly installed pump.

The new equipment we had installed was itself the source of the problem.

We ordered a replacement motor. But replacing it meant bringing back the specialized crane truck, pulling the assembly out of the well again, and repeating hours of work.

During that difficult week, the family expressed how relieved they were to have a contractor who stood behind the products and workmanship. Their trust meant a great deal to me while we were still working toward a resolution.

The crane truck’s only available opening for the next two weeks was at 9:30 at night.

We decided to work overnight.

The family had already experienced enough disruption. This was our opportunity to complete the repair and get their water back.

Starting at 9:30 p.m., our team worked for six hours to pull the pump, replace the motor, and lower the assembly back into the well.

What I remember most clearly is how proud I felt watching our team put our company’s values into practice.

Integrity meant taking responsibility for resolving the problem. Courage meant accepting a difficult job at an unusual hour. Professionalism meant completing the work and checking the operating conditions before leaving. Teamwork made it possible to bring the equipment, people, and repair together.

At 3:30 a.m., the water was back and the system was operating properly.

The homeowners were sleeping, so we left quietly.

What This Job Shows About Submersible Pump Repairs

What This Job Shows About Submersible Pump Repairs

On this project, accessing the pump required hours of lifting and lowering equipment. Identifying the failing motor was only one part of the repair; reaching it was a major undertaking of its own.

For homeowners arranging water well service, this experience offers a few useful questions to ask:

  • What do the well records tell us? Incomplete records made the depth and lifting requirements harder to establish on this job.

  • What testing supports the diagnosis? Here, unusual electrical readings helped us identify the failing motor.

  • Will specialized equipment be needed? The depth and weight of this installation required a pump crane truck.

  • What happens if problems continue after installation? Understanding how a contractor handles follow-up service matters when your household depends on the result.

In our case, follow-up meant more than five complimentary visits, an owner’s Saturday evening visit, and a return trip with the crane to replace the motor.

Well Pump Service Means Standing Behind the Work

Well Pump Service Means Standing Behind the Work

When someone asks us to repair a well pump, they are trusting us with something their household relies on every day.

That responsibility stays with us when a job becomes more difficult than expected.

For this Newmarket family, restoring water meant being able to do laundry, run their home, and prepare to welcome people around their dinner table. Those everyday needs were the reason to keep working through the problem.

Helping our local community thrive starts with showing up and following through. That night, I was proud of how our team did both.
